Eclipse Plugins

A practical engineering approach to using embedded Java in real-world applications.

See the official Eclipse Plugin Central web area. This page is not a replacement for that but is a place to share what we have learned about plugins specific to embedded Java and C.

Some Helpful Eclipse Plugins (2007 Oct 10)
Here are some Eclipse plugins and where to get them. Install them using the Eclipse Update Manager located in Help->Software Updates->Find & Install then select "Search fro new features" and click on the "New Remote Site" button and use the URL given. You can read about these at the Eclipse Plugin Central web area.
  1. Subclipse (Subversion for Eclipse) at http://subclipse.tigris.org
  2. C/C++ Tools (through the Update Manager Europa Discovery Site). This seems to also be the only "signed" Eclipse feature I use.
  3. Tiny HTML tools at http://www.bastian-bergerhoff.com/eclipse/features

Eclipse Plugins on my Wish (or Anti-Wish) LIst (2007 Oct 10)
These are plugins I'd like to try soon. You can read about these at the Eclipse Plugin Central web area.
  1. Mylyn (through the Update Manager Europa Discovery Site) - I know nothing about Mylyn (formerly Mylar, you can guess there was a tradename clash with DuPont hence the renaming) so I'm starting with the Task List and Java Development bridge, plus the Focussed UI, Eclipse IDE Bridge, Bugzilla connector, and Bridge to PDE/CVS/Ant
  2. EclipseColorer at http://colorer.sf.net/eclipsecolorer/ but this doesn't have the latest 0.8 version... odd... but the SourceForge page does have version 0.8 along with installation instructions. After installation it's not clear how to get this to work...
  3. AVR tools including AVRDude. Installed these under Eclipse 3.2 but never go them fully configured and working. Atmel is moving to Eclipse-based tools anyway so this may solve itself in time. For now I edit in Eclipse and build in WinAVR.
  4. MyEclipseIde is an annualsubscription service for about US$50. I don't like the idea of software that stops working, ever, but it's been favorably reviewed and includes a wide array of useful tools such as a WYSIWYG HTML editor, UML, JAVA GUI editor for SWT, and so forth. I tried this and it made Eclipse startup so painfully slow I could not stand to use it. So I uninstalled it.
