OneWire pinout: where is PIN 1?

OneWire pinout
Here is the OneWire pinout as used on Dallas and Systronix TINI sockets boards, and Systronix OneWire network boards (probably also by many others, but I have not personally verifed that).

OneWire pinout: where is PIN 1?

There has been some confusion on the part of customers asking about the RJ12 pinout for OneWire networks and the 9097U-9 pinout not agreeing with other boards.

The Dallas TINI socket board agrees with ours, and I know the 9097U works. So the difference must be in what is called Pin 1. (On modular connectors it is complicated more by the latch being either down or up which rotates the whole connector 180 degrees, moving pin 1 to the other end.)

Sure enough, on the 9097U, "pin1" is on the right as you face the receptacle, with the latch down. *Incorrect*

Looking at an AMP neworking catalog #1307515, page 613 and 614, with latch UP, pin 1 is on the right. Looks like Dallas got it wrong on the 9097U data sheet but correct on their sockets boards.

So the bottom line is the DS9097U pin1 designation is incorrect, pin1 should be on the left, facing their receptacle with the latch down. If you call that pin1, then the OWIO is on pin3 and it all works OK with all the Dallas and Systronix sockets boards. The Dallas and Systronix sockets boards have the correct OneWire pinout, as do parts manufacturer catalogs.

OneWire Modular Cable

To use modular cable with Systronix or Dallas sockets boards and OneWire boards such as Systronix 8x1Wire, you need a cable which maps pin1 on one end to pin1 on the other end. Oddly, perhaps, this is called a "crossover" modular cable. If you hold such a cable out straight (no twists), the latch of one modular plug will be up and the other end will have the latch down.

Such a cable will work between a TINI sockets board and 8x1Wire, or between a DS9097U-09 serial port adapter and 8x1Wire

Such a cable will also work well (this may sound strange) between a DS9097U-09 and a TILT board (when the TILT has no TINI installed and is being used to provide OneWire network power).
